Becoming self-aware is a life long journey. We think we know everything when we’re young, only to realise later that if we’re really lucky we’ll still be learning about ourselves and growing personally right up till the end of our life!
Have you ever wondered why some people seam so happy within themselves, their contagious behaviour and attitude toward life spilling over and infecting everyone they come into contact with, while others drag themselves through life seemingly up-set with every step they take?
Knowing our strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes can be one simple step toward finding out who we are and what we want. Our wants are our driving force. Life has a way of giving to us what we want even though sometimes it’s really tough to stay focused and continue doing the things that lead us toward what we want. Some people call wants “goals” or “targets”, lets be frank with ourselves, nobody focuses and works toward achieving something that they do not personally value or want. We are happiest when we are working toward something that we personally want.
Deciding what it is we want gives us direction, even if its not crystal clear at the beginning it will become clearer to us as we work our way toward achieving it. As we travel along our path toward our wants we learn about ourselves, what we like dislike are good at and not so good at.
Life is a bit like sailing a boat. We start off in a particular direction with a destination in mind and it can be calm and plain sailing for us. However, sailors are always conscious of the weather and just like sailing a boat sometimes a storm can blow up in our lives, for example something emotional occurs requiring all our attention and energy. We get blown and tossed around during the life storm, often we have little control and once the storm has gone we could be facing in a completely different direction to the one we chose at the beginning of our journey.
The point is knowing/remembering what it is we want after the storm has blow away will help us get back on track in our lives.
